Women in da Vinci Surgery – Empowering Surgeons, Driving Progress, Improving Patient Care

I am deeply honoured to be part of Intuitive’s Women in da Vinci Surgery campaign, which celebrates the voices and journeys of female surgeons in robotic-assisted surgery.

Having been part of the early conversations that helped shape this initiative in the UK and Europe, it has been inspiring to see it grow into a vibrant, global movement. Women in da Vinci Surgery (WIDVS) is not just about representation—it is about creating the conditions where all surgeons can thrive and lead.

When all surgeons, including those from underrepresented groups, are empowered to lead and contribute beyond the operating theatre, we unlock the true potential of our profession. Leadership in surgery goes far beyond clinical skill. It extends into mentorship, where experienced surgeons guide and support the next generation; into clinical innovation, where we refine techniques and develop new approaches to improve recovery and outcomes; and into strategic decision-making, where we help shape the policies, resources, and systems that underpin patient care.

This broader engagement strengthens our surgical teams and creates more resilient, forward-thinking healthcare environments. For patients, this means receiving care from teams who are not only technically skilled, but also deeply invested in designing better, safer, and more compassionate treatment pathways. An inclusive, collaborative culture ensures that every patient benefits from a diversity of perspectives and ideas—whether that’s through enhanced recovery protocols, improved communication, or more personalised treatment plans.

Technology plays an important role in enabling this future. The da Vinci surgical systems offer ergonomic benefits for surgeons and allow us to perform complex procedures with greater precision through minimally invasive techniques. For patients, this often means smaller incisions, less pain, quicker recovery, and a faster return to normal activities. But technology alone is not enough. The most meaningful innovation happens when advanced tools meet empowered people—surgeons who have a voice, a seat at the table, and the confidence to use both to effect change.

Thank you to Intuitive for recognising that progress in surgery is as much about people as it is about technology. Together, we are shaping a future that is more inclusive, more thoughtful, and ultimately better for every patient we serve.
