Coil / IUD Fitting

Expert Coil (IUD) Fitting: Your Contraception, Your Comfort

Choosing a long-acting, reliable contraceptive is an empowering step in managing your reproductive health. The coil, or Intrauterine Device (IUD), is one of the most effective methods available, offering “fit and forget” peace of mind for years at a time.

At Happiher, we understand that while the benefits are clear, the thought of the fitting procedure can be a source of anxiety for many women. Our specialist-led coil fitting service is designed to be different. Dr. Manou Kaur provides an expert, unhurried, and comfortable experience, ensuring your chosen method of contraception begins with confidence and care.

What is a Coil (IUD)?

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that is gently placed inside your uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types, allowing you to choose the option that best suits your body and lifestyle.

  1. The Hormonal Coil (IUS – Intrauterine System)
  • Brands: Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess
  • How it Works: This coil releases a very low, localised dose of the hormone progestogen. This thins the lining of the uterus, thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from passing through, and can sometimes prevent ovulation.
  • Key Benefits: In addition to being a highly effective contraceptive, it is famous for making periods much lighter, less painful, and sometimes stopping them altogether. It is an excellent choice for women with heavy, painful periods and can be a treatment for conditions like endometriosis. It lasts for 3, 5, or 8 years depending on the brand.
  1. The Non-Hormonal Coil (IUD – Intrauterine Device)
  • How it Works: This coil is made of plastic and wrapped in natural, safe copper. Copper creates an environment that is toxic to sperm, preventing it from fertilizing an egg.
  • Key Benefits: It is a completely hormone-free method of contraception, making it ideal for women who prefer not to use hormones or cannot for medical reasons. It is effective for 5 or 10 years, depending on the type, and can also be used as a highly effective form of emergency contraception.

The Happiher Difference: A Specialist-Led Fitting

Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. We take extra steps to ensure your fitting is as smooth and pain-free as possible.

  • Pre-Fitting Consultation: Your appointment begins with a discussion to ensure the coil is the right choice for you. We will answer all your questions and explain every step of the process.
  • Pain Management Options: We believe in proactive pain relief. We can offer local anaesthetic options to numb the cervix, a technique that significantly reduces the discomfort associated with the procedure.
  • Expert Technique: As a consultant gynaecologist, Dr. Kaur has extensive experience and skill in performing uterine procedures. Her expert technique ensures the fitting is as quick, gentle, and straightforward as possible.
  • Post-Fitting Support: We will ensure you are comfortable before you leave and provide clear aftercare instructions. We can also use an ultrasound scan to confirm the coil is perfectly positioned for your peace of mind.

Your Patient Journey: What to Expect

  1. The Consultation: We will confirm your suitability, discuss the different types of coils, and choose the best one for you.
  2. The Fitting: The procedure itself is very quick, usually taking only 5-10 minutes. You will lie on an examination couch, similar to having a smear test. A speculum is used to view the cervix, which is then cleaned. We measure the inside of your uterus before the coil is gently inserted.
  3. Immediately After: It is normal to experience some period-like cramping and light spotting after the fitting. We recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day.
  4. Follow-Up: A follow-up check is recommended around 6 weeks after your fitting to ensure the threads are in place and that you are happy with your coil.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Does the coil fitting hurt?
This is the most common concern. For most women, it feels similar to a strong period cramp. However, it is different for everyone. Our offer of local anaesthetic and our expert, gentle technique are designed to minimize this discomfort as much as possible.
  2. Can the coil cause infections?
There is a very small increased risk of pelvic infection in the first 20 days after fitting. We ensure the procedure is done in a sterile manner to minimize this risk. We will also take swabs beforehand if there is any concern.
  3. Will I be able to feel the coil?
You will not be able to feel the coil itself. You and your partner should not feel it during sex. You will be able to feel the small, fine threads at the top of your vagina, which is how you can check it is still in place.
  4. How soon is it effective?
The non-hormonal (copper) coil is effective immediately. The hormonal coil is effective immediately if fitted within the first 7 days of your cycle; otherwise, you will need to use alternative contraception (like condoms) for the next 7 days.
